It’s the era of peace and love in the 1960s, but nothing is peaceful in Caroline’s life. Since her beautiful older sister disappeared, fifteen-year-old Caroline might as well have disappeared too. She’s invisible to her parents, who can’t stop blaming each other. The police keep following up on leads even Caroline knows are foolish. The only one who seems to care about her is Tony, her sister’s older boyfriend, who soothes Caroline’s desperate heart every time he turns his magical blue eyes on her.
Tony is convinced that the answer to Jess’s disappearance is in California, the land of endless summer, among the runaways and flower children. Come with me, Tony says to Caroline, and we’ll find her together. Tony is so loving, and all he cares about is bringing Jess home. And so Caroline follows, and closes a door behind her that may never open again.
Inspired by the disturbing case of Charles Schmid, ‘the Pied Piper of Tucson’, Half in Love with Death is a heartfelt thriller that never lets up.
Caroline feels like no one will listen to her after her older sister Jess disappears one night. She wishes so badly that she hadn’t hidden the fact that Jess snuck out from their parents but how was she supposed to know that this time Jess wouldn’t come back in the morning.
When Caroline thinks that she may know where Jess is and no one listens to her and worse the police seemingly have stopped looking for Jess, Caroline becomes very determined to find her sister, even if she has to do it all on her own.
Luck for Caroline, Jess’ boyfriend, Tony, wants to find Jess just as much as she does. In the midst of planning to find Jess, Caroline, who has always be somewhat infatuated with her sisters boyfriend, starts to fall for Tony and all his attractive bad boy ways. But because of her infatuation with Tony and his promise to help her find Jess, Caroline can’t see what is really happening. Slowly things start to fall into place and Caroline finally starts to see Tony for who he really is, not a normal bad boy with a lonely soft side but something much much worse.
All in all I really enjoyed the way this book came together even if some parts were predictable for me. I really wish I knew what happened after all was said and done but sometimes the best ending is to leave a question or two unanswered! I recommend that if you like realistic fiction or fiction that has been inspired by real life events that you pick up a copy of Half In Love With Death today, you will not regret it!
